New Worlds, Old Masters
About the exhibition
Painted worlds and remembered images meet in works that move between invention and the art of the past.

Praetterhoffer’s paintings from 1996 to 2002 are densely worked fields in which landscapes, creatures and human forms seem to emerge, collide and disappear again. Strong colour and restless contours turn each canvas into a world governed by its own scale and atmosphere.
The Old Master paraphrases of 2002 approach familiar compositions by El Greco, Rembrandt, Claude Lorrain, Tintoretto, Titian and Rubens as material for renewed looking. Working in watercolour, chalk, oil and acrylic, Praetterhoffer translates rather than copies: inherited scenes are absorbed into his own rhythms, colours and pictorial imagination.
