In the light drawings of the 1970s, Praetterhoffer moved a point light source through darkness while an open camera shutter recorded its course. The resulting lines occupy the photographed studio or garden as traces of a bodily action: part drawing, part performance and, in the artist’s own formulation, closer to light sculpture.
Praetterhoffer returned to the process from 2007 to 2009 using two digital cameras and sources including electric bulbs, LEDs, glow sticks and candle flames. Presented as paired views, these late works make the drawing stereoscopic. Gesture is no longer only pictured in space; it can be perceived as a spatial event.
